Back to School?! How About Back to Summer!

I knew it was coming, but I thought we’d get a little further into July. No, of course not. Last night, I saw the first official Back to School (BTS) sign. It was on our local Best Buy store and I have this feeling that it has been there for a while.

It used to be that students and parents thought about going back to school about a week before the actual event. These days, if you’re buying school supplies in early August, well, suffice it to say that your kid will have the ugliest notebooks and pencil cases in the entire class. Good luck dealing with that meltdown!

I’m all for planning ahead, but for God’s sake, I’m not even tired of watering my flowers yet. I’m not even pissed off at the bee population. And, call the newspaper, I don’t even mind being around my kids. Trust me, by the end of summer, I’m the first one to scream: “Let’s discuss year-round school as a viable option!”

But this is mid-July, people. I haven’t even had my first ice cream cone. (OK, fine, I’m avoiding it because I’m on a diet, but I haven’t even craved my first ice cream cone.) I’m all for small government, but can’t we outlaw talk of BTS until at least August 15th?

Maybe my problem isn’t so much this talk of summer ending. Maybe it’s because I know, that once we let loose the BTS beast, then around the corner will be Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas screaming closely behind. So join me, if you will, in a full-scale denial of all things back to school. Is it worth it? Yes, even if the folders are hideous and the protractors are picked over. Just say no!

BTS? Heck, the local Hobby Lobby clearanced the summer stuff before Memorial Day, and have ALL their Christmas stuff out right now. It's NUTS.

What bothers me most is all the BTS sales are going on NOW, but I don't have the school lists yet...and of course, when the lists come out, there will be nothing on sale that is on the list. sigh.

Our local Target has the required equipment lists for each school up already. Can't we get rid of all the leftovers from the 4th before we start thinkin about school.

I am really glad that I don't have to worry about "back-to-school" anymore!!

Oops, too late. I actually bought school supplies today and yesterday. But I did offend a clerk and a customer in line with me who both questioned me severely about my faux pas. Sorry! I was bored!!! Oh, and I'm totally with you on the severely questioning the teens in the household. Ay yi yi. Congrats on site of the day. Michele sent me and I'm wondering why I don't stop by more often!

I saw CANDY CORN front and center in the grocery store today. In July! So wrong. It's not even Mallomar season yet!

It's a slippery slope! ;) Sometimes, I'm happy not to have kids for the whole BTS thing. I rent my friends' kids instead!

Congrats on being Michele's site of the day! :D

Hello, Michele sent me - this is my first visit. I'll be checking around.
I've already read the entry on the kids' bedroom. Yeah, I can relate to that.

In New Zealand, we don't do Thanksgiving, Halloween is a very recent invasion, but Christmas coincides with summer holidays. We could really do with a decent winter celebration. Back to school here comes in February, and the advertising starts in January, after Christmas and then the post Christmas sales. We don't seem to have that problem with stationery selling out, either. this is the first winter that I don't want to end too quickly, because we are going to the UK in September and I'd like to think that we will get some sunshine when we're there.
Michele sent me to congratulate you on being her site of the day!

LOML told me that on a recent trip to one store, they already had Halloween decorations available. In July, fergawdssake!

Me, I'm looking forward to slightly earlier sunsets, so that the small and sweet ones go to sleep a little earlier, and LOML and I get longer
evenings to ourselves!

Congratulations on being site of the day!

It's happening here too. But we go back to school in about a month. What gets me it that it's mid-July (in Florida no less) and I cannot find a pair of shorts to save my life! Everything's in for fall now. We don't have fall here...

Stop making my life go even faster than it does!

Michele sent me today!

Hey, there! Michele sent me; congrats on being the site of the day.

I agree about BTS hysteria. In fact, to make matters worse over here, we've been fighting with our local school since May to have our daughter admitted to kindergarten this year. The more time I have to win, the better off my daughter will be. (not to mention my blood presure!)

I feel your pain! I hate the BTS bulls&%t and you are right, Halloween is right behind, which apparently has now become a national holiday!

Love your blog, I have been there and done that. My son is approaching 21 in 43 days. His count not mine! You are right getting information is an art form and creative questioning is the way. Believe it or not, once they are on their own (more or less, ie college) they will divulge more info. Maybe it's the distance. Anyway, Carry on Super MOM!!! You're on the right track!

I was directed to you by michele.

Oh, wouldn't it be nice to wait until mid August to think about it again? I grew up in Massachusetts & the kids went back to school (I was homeschooled) The Wednesday after Labor day back then, (I'm told it's different now though)
My own kids, here in Virginia go back in August (The 15th, this year, to be exact!)
They were out of school May 25th though, so it evens out a little, but it still feels too early to me too.

Apparently it's essential to do back-to-school in July so that we can do Christmas in October.

Hi, Michele sent me.

I'm on your side. Can't we just enjoy the break for a little while?

At 4:27 PM , Blogger Linda said...

there is no enjoyment any more...we can not enjoy the summer break. And I got my daughter's school packet yesterday (see my comment above!) and the list for first graders is RIDICULOUS...not to mention there's a school fee of $54...for WHAT????

Michele sent me this time around!

Michele sent me and I have found someone preaching to my choir! If I let loose, I could rant a long time about this, but for now I'll only point out how sad it is that I can't pick up a new pair of sandals when the weather is 90 degrees F. Of course, I have my pick of winter boots!

I agree....but we start school down here on August 20th (and it's 2 weeks later this year than usual!), so I better get buying!
